With assistance from the Freeman Foundation Undergraduate Asian Studies Funding Initiative, the University of Maryland’s Committee
on East Asian Studies is pleased to announce an awards competition providing funds for East
Asia-related internships and experiential learning opportunities for Summer 2003. The awards
are intended for students who are either (a) pursuing an East Asian academic focus or
(b) interested in linking East Asian studies to academic excellence in a major in the arts,
humanities, business, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, or physical and life
sciences. Individual awards will vary between $250 and $2500.
Eligibility: Awardees must have a minimum of 60 credits by the start of the internship
period and are expected to register full-time for the coming fall semester. Full-time is
defined by the university as registered for 12 or more semester hours at the end of the Schedule
Adjustment period.
Application procedures: Student applicants must have secured, or be in the process
of applying for, a summer internship in an East Asia-related professional or governmental
organization. Internship opportunities that will be considered include, but are not limited to,
the following: national or international governmental and non-governmental organizations; educational
organizations; and businesses and/or corporations. Internships can be local (in the Washington, D.C. area),
national (within the United States) or international (in East Asia). Applications for summer experiential
learning opportunities other than formal internships will also be accepted. Awards will vary depending on
need; i.e., internships and experiential learning opportunities that require international travel
or entail housing costs may secure larger awards.
A complete application consists of the following materials:
1) A copy of the student’s transcript (unofficial/Testudo version is preferred)
2) A one-page statement explaining the internship opportunity and how it is relevant to the applicant’s
East-Asia academic plan. Provide any information about academic accomplishments, career goals,
or activities that the applicant considers relevant. Also, provide details of estimated
expenses.
3) An application form completed by the student.
4) A copy of the announcement of the internship opportunity (e.g., a copy of a web-page
or flyer) or a letter from the sponsoring organization with contact name and information on
the internship.
Applications should be submitted to Dr. Ken Conca, chair, East Asia Scholarships Committee,
3140 Tydings Hall, University of Maryland, College Park MD 20742. All materials must be received
by April 1, 2003 to guarantee consideration. E-mail submissions will not be accepted.
Selection criteria: Awards are meant to facilitate internship opportunities for students
from a wide range of campus majors seeking to link their academic and professional pursuits
to the study of East Asia. In addition to academic excellence, the selection committee will
look for evidence of a commitment to East Asian studies. This commitment may be demonstrated
in several ways: through an East Asian-focused major, the Certificate program in East Asian
Studies, the Business, Culture and Languages program (in an Asian language), a citation program
in an Asian language, or a self-designed plan of study that allows the student to pursue an
interest in East Asia through an existing campus major, including but not limited to majors
in the arts, humanities, business, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, or physical
and life sciences.
