CEAS Scholarships

EAST ASIA INTERDISCIPLINARY SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Anna Burrows
Anna is a major in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. She is working toward the Korean Studies citation and spent the fall 2002 semester on study-abroad in Korea, studying Korean language and history and Chinese history at Yonsei University. She has also worked as a researcher with the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Her goals are to pursue a doctorate in Molecular Biology, become a member of the international scientific community, and gain a deeper understanding of cross-cultural dimensions of international scientific cooperation.

Devin Ellis
Devin is a Government and Politics major with interests in China, history and culture, and philosophy. He has worked as an undergraduate research assistant with Dr. Lois Vietri in GVPT and interned with Congressman James Maloney. He is a member of the campus global communities living-learning program. His goals are to begin intensive Chinese language study, to continue his studies in politics and economic development, and to obtain a National Security Education program grant to study in China. His ultimate goals are to pursue graduate studies and a career in the Foreign Service, promoting positive relations between the United States and China.

Catherine Matacic
Catherine is pursuing a double major in Chinese and Journalism. She has combined her interests by working as a journalist on Capitol Hill. She is taking a study-abroad semester in Taiwan during the spring 2003 semester and hopes to stay on and work with the AP bureau in Taipei this summer. Her plans on graduation are to work with the Peace Corps in Asia and then to pursue a career as an international correspondent.

Trin Xue
Trin is a Computer Science major. Her interest in Japanese language studies began in high school, where she led her team to a second-place finish in the Japan Bowl, a national Japanese-language competition. She has continued her studies in Japanese at UMD and is planning to intern this summer through the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience, an organization in which she is an officer. Her goal is to pursue an international career in computer science and business.

EAST ASIA FOCUS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Christopher Blair-Gould
Christopher is majoring in Chinese with a certificate in East Asian Studies. His interests lie in Chinese and East Asian history and culture, and were prompted initially by taking Chinese language classes in the evening through the USDA in Washington. He has volunteered as an English teacher in the local Chinese community and as a Speaking Partner with the Maryland English Institute. His goals are to finish a B.A. in Chinese and M.A. in East Asian History at UMD, and to pursue an academic career that allows him to continue studying Chinese language and East Asian History.

Victoria Chang
Victoria is a double major in Chinese and Communication. Her interests lie in Chinese and East Asian language and cultures. She is on the Executive Board of the Chinese Culture Club, and is a recipient of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Award and the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education award for outstanding academic achievement. She plans to study abroad in China in 2004. Her long-term goal is to utilize her Chinese language skills in a public relations career with a global agency.

Renée Ferguson
Renée is a Japanese major who began her Japanese studies in high school, where she also hosted Japanese high school students visiting the United States. Her interests include Japanese literature and culture. She is planning to study in Japan next year and hopes to participate in the JET Teacher Exchange Program after graduation. She is considering pursuing a doctorate in Japanese Literature.

Sang-Hui Kim
Sang-Hui is a double major in Japanese and Anthropology. She began Japanese studies in high school, where she served as president of the Japanese National Honor Society. She participated in an exchange program to Yokohama, Japan and in the Japan Bowl culture and language competition in Washington DC. She lives in Language House and is planning to study abroad in Japan during her junior year. Her long-term goals are to pursue an academic career as a cultural anthropologist focusing on Japan, Korea and China.
